Looking for an Alternative to Storage Heaters?

If you’ve got electric storage heaters and are looking for an alternative because you’ve had enough of paying through the nose or putting up with trying to predict whether you need the heating on tomorrow, what are the options?

The Energy Saving Trust website offers a few ideas and they reckon the ‘preferred option’ is to replace storage heaters with an electric boiler or heat pump, with radiators or underfloor heating. They say whilst it can cost a fair bit for the installation, it will save money in the long term.

And they are right: it will. And to be honest if you think about installation, electric boilers are actually straightforward and quick to fit, so labour costs aren’t that high in the scheme of things. And then you’ve got to consider other things like the fact you don’t need to pay for a booster pump on your power shower, providing you pick a good electric boiler.

If youj're fed up having to get the crystal ball out to determine whether to put the storage heaters on, explore an alternative.

You don’t need a hot water storage tank when you have an electric boiler, so you can have that taken out and put the boiler in its place. You don’t have to worry about it being noisy as they are very quiet in operation, so if your tank is in the airing cupboard in the bedroom, no problem. And there’s no risk of carbon monoxide fumes, and you don’t need it to be on an outside wall as it doesn’t need a flue.

Running costs are low through peak avoidance tariffs and certain boilers offer efficiency rates up to 99% plus.

Storage heaters are replaced with electric central heating radiators or you can opt for underfloor heating, or a combination of both.
